Abigail's Helpful Hands

Our team of caregivers and compassionate professionals has recognized a significant and ongoing need among former professional athletes—including those from hockey, soccer, the NBA, and the NFL—who experienced traumatic brain injuries, repeated head trauma, and concussions during their careers. Many exceptionally talented players were forced to retire early due to injuries sustained both on and off the field.

Through our work, we have learned that many former athletes remain largely uninformed about what to expect as their minds and bodies age. In most cases, they were not provided with adequate education or long-term aftercare guidance by their former employers.

Athletes who once supported families and extended communities during their professional careers may later find themselves unable to maintain employment. This loss of stability often compounds feelings of frustration, isolation, and hopelessness. Many former players have since been diagnosed with cognitive and neurological conditions, including traumatic brain injury–related dementia, chronic headaches, extreme mood swings, and severe depression.

Too often, these individuals are left to navigate profound changes to their health, relationships, and daily functioning on their own—struggling to understand why everyday tasks and interactions have become increasingly difficult.

Tragically, some of these still-proud athletes are lost to substance abuse or violence—sometimes directed toward those they love most, and at times toward themselves.

There are programs and resources available to assist former athletes, depending on the length of their careers and the circumstances of their release. It is vitally important that this information is shared with players, their families, and the professionals who support them.

As an in-home healthcare provider, we believe our clients’ needs are of the utmost importance. Our entire team is dedicated to reaching out to former professional athletes with a helping hand—offering education, resources, practical assistance, and a deep understanding of their unique challenges. We are committed to ensuring no one is overlooked, and we will be there when support is needed most.
